Hypnosis has been defined as a psychological state with specific physiological attributes that look like sleep. This definition captures our shared understanding of hypnosis, but research has revealed that hypnosis is a natural phenomenon that happens when people concentrate mentally on something. When people are in hypnosis, they are in a heightened state of focused awareness or concentration. They can concentrate intensely on a specific thought or memory without conscious interference.
A hypnosis session usually starts with a hypnotic induction, a deepening process, and then therapy. The final stage is just exiting hypnosis. The therapy stage is the most important because that is where the hypnotic suggestions and visualizations are given. As long as the client accepts the suggestions, they become permanent memory. The hypnotic suggestions will be given to a client by a hypnotherapist in Newcastle upon Tyne or self-administered, commonly called self-hypnosis, “self-suggestion,” or “autosuggestion.”
“Hypnosis” comes from the Greek word “Hypnos,” which means sleep. The words “hypnosis” and “hypnotism” both derive from the term “neuro-hypnotism” (nervous sleep), which was coined by the Scottish surgeon James Braid around 1841. Braid based his practice on that developed by Franz Anton Mesmer. This is where we get the word “Mesmerize” from.
Many believe that when in hypnosis, a person is in an unconscious state of mind resembling sleep. However, research has shown that hypnotic subjects are not asleep but fully awake and are in a heightened state of awareness. When in natural hypnosis, people are in a very suggestible state of mind and are far more likely to accept a suggestion from another person. As long as the suggestion is not against something the person feels strongly about or against their religious beliefs, the suggestion is commonly accepted, which will then be acted upon.
Hypnotism is nothing to be frightened of because it is a natural phenomenon that is very much like daydreaming. You can go into hypnosis anytime and exit the state anytime. A person can’t get stuck in hypnosis.
Hypnotherapy is a skill used by a hypnotherapist in Newcastle who uses the “tool” of hypnosis to help people change their unwanted habits, behaviours, and emotions. When the analyzing conscious mind is bypassed, the therapist will give repeated positive suggestions and visualizations, which will then be programmed into the subconscious mind.
