Do You Need Help With A Phobia?

Hypnotherapist Ian Smith has helped many of his clients overcome social phobias. Even if you think your fear is very unusual, if it’s causing you difficulties, pick up the phone and talk to Ian Smith. He will always take your problem seriously and keep it 100% confidential.

Have these types of thoughts ever entered your mind?

  • I could never tell anyone; it’s embarrassing; nobody else suffers from this, do they?
  • I feel so stupid. I know it’s irrational to be afraid, but I can’t help it.
  • I would never tell anyone about my fear. When I go out, it’s always in my mind; what if? Sometimes I’ll even leave the company I’m in. I’ll make an excuse and flee.
  • When I feel confident, I occasionally tell people about my problem, but they look puzzled or give me advice. This is because they don’t understand what it’s like.

You wouldn’t be the only person with negative thoughts like those above. If you looked at a list of phobias online, you would be amazed at how many different fears there are.

Phobias: Where Does The Word Phobia Come From?

The word “Phobia” comes from the Greek φόβος “fear”); it is an irrational, persistent fear of certain situations, objects, activities, or persons. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. Phobias can vary in intensity – in their effect on people’s lives, from being an inconvenience to completely restricting, as in the case of Agoraphobia.

There is no cause for despair, however, as people who suffer from phobias can be successfully treated and overcome their fears. A phobia is a persistent fear of a genuine or perceived danger commonly stemming from childhood; the causes fall into three categories:

Phobias, Fear Of A Specific Object

The most common are:

  • Fear of spiders
  • Fear of snakes
  • Fear of insects
  • Fear of needles
  • Fear of cats
  • Fear of dogs
  • Fear of horses
  • Fear of feathers
  • Fear of fish
  • Fear of rats
  • Fear of blood
  • Fear of pigeons

The fear comes from a previous frightening incident, e.g., being bitten by a dog, or an incident witnessed and identified with, e.g., a spider put down someone’s back as a prank, and the subsequent humiliation caused. A phobia can also be a learned behaviour from a family member, perhaps, e.g., “Don’t touch that (object); it’s filthy!” said overly scornfully. A bad emotional experience can be anchored to an object.

Phobias, Fear Of A Situation Or Place

Fear of heights, flying, lifts (elevators), supermarkets, and shopping malls. This originates from a frightening incident, e.g., being trapped in a rush. A social phobia is more complex; sufferers typically lack confidence, fear large crowds, and get close emotionally or physically with others. This type of phobia is often associated with a life-changing event. From the past, the perceived danger or actual trauma is usually repressed and transferred to other situations.

Phobias, Fear Of Illness Or Death

This occurs when sufferers have witnessed, heard, or read about death or illness and identify with it. e.g., illness or death of a family member. The disease is then associated with themselves. This is often connected to insecurity and loss of control, especially in childhood.
